A home energy audit is the first step in making your home more energy efficient . It is an assessment of how much energy your household uses as well as an analysis of your home systems to help determine any energy inefficiency problems you may be experiencing.

Using this information, we can identify cost effective ways to improve the comfort and efficiency of your home. A thorough audit and the appropriate follow-up actions can significantly reduce your energy bill.

The HERS Index is a scoring system established by RESNET (Residential Energy Services Network ) in which a home built to the specifications of the HERS Reference Home (based on the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code) scores a HERS Index of 100, while a net zero energy home scores a HERS Index of 0. The lower a home’s HERS Index, the less energy it uses, and the more energy efficient it is.

As accredited ENERGY STAR® Partners and Xcel Energy Trade Partners, we are certified and highly trained in the technical field of home energy testing. Professional auditors use a variety of techniques and equipment to determine the energy efficiency of your home. Typically an audit takes 2 to 3 hours depending on the size and complexity of the house.  During an audit, we will perform the following:

♦ Sit down with you and discuss the issues that have led you to request an audit

♦ Analyze one year of past gas/electric bills

♦ Measure the size of the house

♦ Walk through the house to visually inspect all rooms and areas

♦ Conduct a combustion safety test of the mechanicals, such as the boiler, hot water heater, and/or furnace

♦ Inspect the insulation levels throughout the home

♦ Review the condition of the crawl space, if applicable

♦ Inspect for drafty areas while conducting a blower door test

♦ Inspect the walls and ceilings with an infrared camera

♦ Discuss preliminary findings with the homeowner

Following the visit to the house, we will analyze the information collected and write a report.  The report will include photo images and a set of suggested improvements that we feel will be either cost-effective or valuable because they will increase the level of comfort in the house.  The report will then be mailed or emailed to the homeowner. After any suggested improvements are implemented through our Energy Retrofit Services, we will make a return visit to the house and perform a post-improvement blower door test of the home to see if the original issues have been adequately addressed.  There is no charge for any return visit(s).

Additionally, Xcel offers rebates ranging from the Home Energy Audit itself to several improvements should you choose to implement them. Please CALL or EMAIL us for a no-obligation consultation or if you have any questions.
